1. You and your partner will be assigned a couple of chapters from Catcher in the Rye, an act from Macbeth, or a short story/poem we read this semester.
2. Look over the reading together and make sure you know it thoroughly. Talk to each other about plot, characters, and themes.
3. Post your responses to this discussion board thread.
4. Put both of your names AND the section of your reading at the top of the post (so I can give you credit!).
5. Discuss and write up the following on your post:
-A two paragraph summary of the reading.
-A list of the major characters (no more than 4) in your reading. Briefly describe who they are/what they do in these chapters.
-Describe how your reading exemplifies an important theme AND/OR the historical-cultural background of the literature (3-4 sentences)
-List three quotes from your reading you enjoyed or found important. Write out the full quote, the page number it was found, on and: a.) Paraphrase it or describe what it means, and b.) Explain why it’s important or why you enjoyed it. (Approximately 2 sentences for each quote.) DO NOT just pull the quotes off Sparknotes/Schmoop--go back to the book and find quotes. You will lose points if I see copying and pasting from a website...
Double check everything for spelling and grammar errors. Do a good job on this…not only because you’re getting graded on it, but because it will help you and your colleagues study for next week’s exam. It is worth 25 points and is due at the END OF THE DAY on Wednesday, June 4th. Good luck!

Catcher in the Rye chapters 23-26
The chapters 23-26 were basically about how Holden was talking about Mr. Antonili, talked to Phoboe, went to Mr.Antolini house to sleepover, and left his house to wonder NYC. After the night he left Mr.Antolini's house, he went to go meet Phoboe and picked her up from school. While waiting for her, he saw that somebody had written a curse on the wall and he hated that. In Chapter 26 he decided that he was going to California to go and live with his Brother D.B. After getting there, D.B was with a English girl and started asking Holden a lot of questions. At the end of the book, Holden reflected on his life and how much he missed people from his life.
This reading exemplifies the important idea of Holden trying to keep children's innocence. Holden tried so hard to keep Phoboes innocence so she did not let him go see D.B with him.
-Holden: he is the main character. -Mr.Antolini: he was Holden's very young teacher. Holden was comftorble with him. -D.b.: he is Holden's older brother. -Pheobe: she is Holden's younger brother.
"I even started picturing how it would be when I came back. I knew my mother'd get nervous as hell and start to cry and beg me to stay home and not go back to my cabin, but I'd go anyway." (205) This quote basically means the he would leave if someone really needed him. His mom would miss him a lot and ask him to come back and initially not to leave. I liked the quote because it is exactly what I do to my mother. She always wants me to be with her but I never want to be with her. "The more I thought about it, though, the more depressed and screwed up about it I got."(195) I liked this quote because it really relates to real life. The quote is important because it shows the whole line of the story. He has to forget about home and everyone there so he doesn't feel like crap anymore. "All the kids kept trying to grab for the gold ring, and so was old Pheobe, and I was sort of afraid she'd fall off the gaddam horse, but I didn't say anything or do anything."(211) I think that this quote is important because it really shows Holden's character and how he really acts. I like the quote because of how he acts exactly like I do. I would do the same exact thing as him in this type of situation.

Macbeth Act 3
The start of Act 3 starts with an aside from Banquo. He talks about how the prophecy of the three witches came true, but he’s suspicious that Macbeth overtook the throne by killing Duncan. In act 1, Macbeth plans to host a dinner for all the nobles. Before the dinner, he sent three murderers to kill Banquo and Fleance. When they attacked in scene 3, they killed Banquo but Fleance escaped. They deliver the news to Macbeth in scene 4 and he was worried but he thought that Fleance couldn’t really do anything for now. When the dinner was occurring, he saw apparitions of Banquo, all bloody, just staring at him. He gets crazy and starts screaming at the ghost and he scares all his guests. Lady Macbeth calmed them down by saying that it’s normal and he’s been like this since he was a child.
Scene 5 is considered to be not a part of what Shakespeare actually wrote. It’s considered to be a part of the musical version of Macbeth writer by Thomas Middleton. The writing pattern suddenly changes and it doesn’t sound like Shakespeare writing. Also, there were song’s added which never appeared in the story before. Scene 6 is focused on Lennox and a lord. They discuss how the deaths of Duncan and Banquo were very timely and Macbeth benefited the most out of them. They also realize here that Macbeth is a tyrant and a usurper.
QUOTES:
“O, treachery! Fly, good Fleance, fly, fly, fly! Thou mayst revenge – O slave!” (Act 3 Scene 3 lines 19-21) - I chose the this quote because I think he was killed but he didn’t die for nothing. HE was able to save Fleance and he is aware of the prophecy that he is father to a line of kings.
“Thou canst not say I did it; never shake thy gory locks at me!” (Act 3 Scene 4 lines 51-51) -I chose this line because it shows how Macbeth is very guilty of killing Banquo. He also showed us that he’s starting to break down. He is a very different man from the start of the story and on the end of the story.
"The son of Duncan, From whom this tyrant holds the due of birth Lives in the English court, and is received Of the most pious Edward with such grace That the malevolence of fortune nothing Takes from his high respect.” (Act 3 Scene 6 lines 24-29) - I chose this line because it shows how Lennox and the lord are furious. They know that Macbeth is a tyrant and it shows us they totally don’t think that he deserves for such a position, being above everyone else.
CHARACTERS:
1.) Macbeth – In act 3, Macbeth polans to host a dinner for all the lords to celebreate hum becoming king. He also sends outthree murderers to kill Banquo and Fleance. 2.) Lady Macbeth – In act 3, Lady Macbeth clams down the guests at the party when Macbeth starts to see Banquo’s ghost. 3.) Banquo – In act 3, Banquo is suspicious of Macbeth and he thinks that he killed Duncan for the throne. He rides out with Fleance and gets killed by three murderers that Macbeth sends out. 4.) 3 Murderes – In act 3, they kill Banquo but they fail to kill Fleance as well. Macbeth sends two of them at first, then he sends the third one for assurance.
THEMES: One theme is death. Another theme is friendship. Banquo tries to save Macbeth for the dark hole he’s in. Last theme is guilt. VON GARCIA AND DESMOND TRACEY

Victor Pasquin and Kyle Connolly Macbeth Act 1 The story takes place in Scotland, and starts off with three witches, who plan to meet with Macbeth who is currently fighting in a battle. Macbeth, who is fighting for Duncan, the rightful king of Scotland, against the traitor, the Thane of Cawdor. After killing him in battle, Macbeth meets up with the three witches who tell Macbeth the prophecy of what is to come. Macbeth, who is already the Thane of Glamis, is predicted to be the Thane of Cawdor and eventually king. Macbeth has his doubts until King Duncan names him Thane of Cawdor. After being named Thane of Cawdor, Macbeth begins to have his suspicions of whether or not the prophecy is true. Banquo, a good friend of Macbeth, believes that Macbeth is becoming too concerned with the prophecy. Macbeth than tells his wife, who then convinces him to want more than being a Thane, and to fulfill The prophecy by killing King Duncan. At first Macbeth is against it, doubting whether or not he can bring himself to do this terrible deed. With a little more convincing, Lady Macbeth finally gets Macbeth to get his mind on becoming the new king of Scotland.
Macbeth - Main character, great fighter, plans to kill King Duncan and become king, Three Witches- Three sisters who can predict the future, tell Macbeth he will become king Lady Macbeth- Macbeths wife, convinces Macbeth to fulfill the prophecy King Duncan- King of Scotland, names Macbeth Thane of Cawdor, goes to Macbeths castle
This act perfectly exemplifies the theme of controlling fate. Macbeth decides that he can take fate into his own hands and become king after learning that the prophecy may be true following being named Thane of Cawdor. After King Duncan names his son Malcolm heir to the throne, Macbeth believes the only way to become king is by controlling his fate and killing Duncan.
"The Prince of Cumberland: that is a step on which I must fall down, or else o'erlap, for in my way it lies." (13) This quote is Macbeth saying that he must become the heir to the throne, for it lies in his way to fulfill the prophecy. I like this quote because it shows Macbeth evolving into an evil character, which makes the story much more interesting.
"Strong both Against the deed; then, as his host, who should against his murderer shut the door, not bear the knife thyself" (19). This quote is Macbeth saying that he should be protecting King Duncan from murderers in his castle, not be the one to murder him. I like this quote because it shows the indecisiveness of Macbeth early on in the story which will fade away quite quickly.
"But screw your courage to the sticking-place, and we'll not fail." (21) This quote is from Lady Macbeth to Macbeth saying to be more courageous and have some guts. I like this quote because it shows Lady Macbeth having more guts than Macbeth early on in the story

Thomas Laible and Jack Tuffy, Luis Santana
Catcher in the rye chap. 10-14
Summary
By this point in the novel, it’s clear that loneliness is at the heart of Holden’s problems. Holden is in New York City and is looking for interaction with people. He goes to a night club and sits at a table and tries to order a drink. The waiter refuses and Holden begins to dance with 3 girls and soon gets laughed at by the girls. This is because the girls notice how he is young and tries to act older. When Holden leaves he begins to think about Jane. He thinks about how she was the only one who seen Allies baseball glove and the time her stepfather made her cry for asking for a cigarette. Holden goes to a different night club called Ernie's. He takes a cab and meets Horwitz. Holden talks about the ducks in Central Park and begins to annoy Horwitz. Once He gets to Ernie's he takes a table and listens to the conversations around him. He finds it depressing and phony. He then leaves and walks back to his hotel. The elevator operator offers to send up a prosecute for 5 dollars and Holden accepts. Holden gets nervous when she arrives and doesn't seduce her. He pays her the 5 dollars but she says the price was 10. He refuses to pay. The pimp comes to the room and makes him pay the 10 dollars and punches him. While Holden is on the floor the pimp leaves and Holden manages to get to bed and go to sleep.
Themes
Holden was a very lonely person, and he missed a lot of people. For example he missed, his little sister, phoebe a lot. He even thinks about jane a lot, he even talked about the times that they had together. He talked about how he showed her allies glove and he didn't show anybody else. He even talked about how he held hands with her and how they held hands. He is so lonely that he even accepts a prostitute to come over to his room. And he doesn't use her for sex but rather just to talk to her because she was so lonely
Characters
Holden- In these chapters he is doing many things such as going to the night club, reminiscing about people he misses such as Jane and Phoebe. He also has a moment with the cab driver, Horwitz, and talked about the ducks in Central Park.
Phoebe- Phoebe is talked about a lot in chapter 10 and Holden gives a long description about her. He says she has red hair and is very intelligent for her age just like Allie.
Horwitz- Holden's cab driver and they have a conversation about the central park ducks.
Maurice- pimp who collects the extra five dollars from Sunny "service" and beats Holden up for it.
3 Quotes: "You'd like her. I mean if you tell old Phoebe something, she knows exactly what the hell you're talking about." This quote talks about how much Holden misses Phoebe. It also shows how much Holden loves Phoebe.
"I always get those vomity kind of cabs if I go anywhere late at night." I liked this quote because I can relate to it because cabs and subways always smell bad and we go to school in the city.
"After old Sunny was gone, I sat in the chair for a while and smoked a couple of cigarettes." This quote shows how much Holden is depressed and has nothing to do with his life.

The Metamorphosis
Summary: Gregor Sampson is a man in his twenties who works as a traveling salesman. Gregor supports his family by working, but as he does so he puts himself in a lot of self-pain. Gregor feels depressed about his uninteresting life. One day Gregor wakes up as vermin. He can't believe what has happened and neither can his family. As a result of this tragedy Gregor spends all his time in his bedroom day after day. Grete, Gregor's sister begins to care for Gregor by feeding him with food scraps. The family begins to become isolated from Gregor as Gregor becomes more "vermin-like." He begins to climb on the walls. As Gregor becomes more and more isolated from his family, his family struggles more and more financially. Once Gregor dies, his family feels a sense of relief and soon realizes that they have more money than they thought.
Theme: Time always catches up to you and your time will run out. Gregor wanted to earn more money for his family but was unable to when he turned into a vermin. He then felt that there was no point to live and became depressed. He then eventually dies, which is his time running out.
Characters: Grete- Has feelings for Gregor in the beginning and then eventually losses his feelings for him. She also likes to play the violin.
Gregor- Turns into a bug and is alienated by his family. He feels there is no point to life. He dies at the end of the book.
Mom- Doesn't have a lot of affection for Gregor once he's a vermin. Scared by the new Gregor.
Dad-Doesn't care much about Gregor. A lazy delivery man.
Quotes: " which was formally his favorite beverage and which therefore had surely been placed there by his sister" This is when Grete brings Gregor the food after he turns into a vermin. I liked this because it shows that Grete still cares for Gregor even though he is now a vermin.
"And besides that the money Gregor had brought home every month he had kept only a few guldon for himself" This is talking about Gregor only keeping some money for himself even though his family was struggling financially. I liked this because it shows how much Gregor cares for his family. "Did he really want to have the warm room, comfortably furnished with heirloom pieces, transformed into a cave, in which he would if course, be able to crawl about freely in all directions, but at the cost of simultaneously forgetting his human past, quickly and totally?" This quote was talking about whether or not there was to be furniture in Gregor's room. I liked this quote because I agree with Gregor that moving out the furniture would make Gregor more bug-like.

Macbeth: Act 5 by Kevin McMahon & Anthony Gonzales
1. The Two paragraph summary. Act 5 of Macbeth is the finale act of the play were everything in the prophecy begins to come true. In scene one of Act 5 it begins to describe the toll the murder of Duncan had on Lady Macbeth. It shows she is sleep walking and talking about the murder as the doctor and the Gentle Women watch and listen. In scene two it describes the battle plans and preparations Macduff's/Malcolm's army are talking to defeat Macbeth. In scene three Macbeth is describing the prophecy and is talking to the doctor about his wife's condition and tells her to make her well. The prophecy though does not really begin to come true until scene 4 of the play.
Scene four is where the prophecy starts to begin. In scene four Malcolm's army is now about to attack Macbeth and use the wood of Birnam as a form of camouflage making the prophecy of the forest of Birnam moving towards Macbeth's castle true. In scene five Macbeth is going crazy and his assistant Seyton informs him that his wife had just died by suicide. He then changes his mood from a fighting spirit, to sadness. It also go's on to say that a messenger informs him that the forest is moving towards his castle creating a sense of anger for Macbeth. In scene seven Malcolm's army begins to move in on Macbeth's castle and a young Siward begins a fight with Macbeth but dies. After the fight Macduff is on the search for Macbeth in the castle. In scene eight is where it all goes down. This scene is the final fight between Macduff and Macbeth. During the fight Macduff reveals he was C sectioned and was not a woman born. After hearing the news Macbeth was shocked, they kept fighting, and finally Macduff chops off Macbeth's head killing the tyrant king. In scene nine Malcolm finally claims his rightful place as king and the people cheer over the death of Macbeth.
Four Characters:
Macbeth- Macbeth was the King of Scotland at the time after he murdered Duncan the originally king of Scotland. In act 5 Macbeth was going crazy over the prophecy of how he was not going by a man who was woman born. He was a ruthless tyrant that killed anyone who got in his way including Duncan, his best friend Banquo, Macduff's family, and a attempt to kill Fleance. He was a ruthless Murderer who died by decapitation by Macduff. Lady Macbeth: Wife to the King Macbeth she was the one person who pushed Macbeth to achieve his true desire of becoming king and pushed him to murder Duncan. She was a complete psychopath through her countless speeches of becoming un-sexed f her womanly instincts and countless talk of blood and killing her own child. The murder of Duncan too a major toll on her for she would sleep walk/talk about the murder and the blood on her hands. She was so consumed by this that she ended up killing herself. Malcolm: Son of the fallen King Duncan he was the prince of Cumberland and retreated along with his brother Donaldbain to England and Ireland to avoid the murderer (a.k.a Macbeth) and die the same death his father did. He along with his companion Macduff and the countless English soldiers led a revolt against Macbeth. At the end of the book after Macbeth dies he takes the crown and becomes the new King of Scotland Macduff: a former of companion of Macbeth; Macduff was the main person who investigated the death of Duncan and leader of the revolution. He went to Malcolm to try to revolt against Macbeth but after he learns his family was murdered by a group of Murders sent by Macbeth. This only fueled his anger and his desire to kill Macbeth. When he goes back to Scotland he fights Macbeth and reveals he was the man not of woman born for he was C-sectioned. He then at the end kills Macbeth and allows Malcolm to become king.
Themes: Fate: Faith was shown I this scene because everything the witches predicted came true. The forest would move toward Macbeth's castle. Also the prediction that Macbeth would encounter and fall to a man who was woman born who was Macduff. Paradox The witches prophecies did come true but wp were not technically true as we'll. For example the forest moved towards Macbeth's castle as a result of Malcolm's and Macduff's army using the branches from the trees as a form of camouflage. Not only this but Macbeth was killed by a man who was not of a woman born which was true because the man who killed him (a.k.a. Macduff) was C-sectioned at birth.
Quotes: "What wood before us? The wood of Birnam. Let every soldier hew him down a bough, and bear't before him; thereby shall we shadow the numbers of our host and make discovery err in report of us."
This quote exist told by Menteith, Siward, and Malcolm. This quote is describing how Malcolm has the idea to use the wood of Birnam as a form of camouflage for his soldiers. It also fulfills the prophecy of the forest moving toward Macbeth's castle.
2. "Despair thy charm, and let the angle whom thou still hast serv'd tell thee, Macduff was from his mother's womb untimely ripp'd."
This quote is important because it is telling us Macbeth is about to die by the hands of Macduff because Macduff was the man not born of a woman. This also shows that the prophecy that the witches predicted is going to come true.
3. "Hail, king, for so thou art. Behold where stands th'usurper's cursed head. The time is free."
This quote shows Malcolm is now going to become the new king of Scotland and now telling all to rejoice for Macbeth had died.

The test taking is very difficult thing for most of the candidates. The process should always be in timely manner and you should be able to cover whole syllabus before the exam. I have followed instructions from my uncle who is a study coach. He also provided me LSAT Sample Questions too for practice.
