Nicholas Leong Robert Maruca 2.Holden Caufield is the main character in the book. The book is written in Holden's point of view. Holden has many problems and is very critical of the people he meets. Holden gets kicked out of school a lot and is destined to have a miserable life. Holden doesn't like many things but one thing. Holden Caufield wants to be a catcher in the rye. Holden wants to save children's innocence and doesn't want them to fall off the cliff.
1.Holden is a 15 year old from Pennsylvania. He is a tall boy. He has an older brother D.B and a younger sister Phoebe. He is in his home town because he just recently got kicked out of school. He likes to go on dates but then gets to scared to do anything else.
3. Likes - girls but specifically Jane Gallagher - cigarettes -Allie -Phoebe -simplicity and purity
Dislikes - liars - people who pick their nose - school - phoney - doesn't like the society and the people around him
4. "Oh god phoebe, don't ask me. I'm sick of everybody asking me that. A million reasons why. It was one of the worst schools I ever went to. It was full of phonies, and mean guys" this was when Holden was telling Phoebe why he got kicked out of Pency. He made a lot of excuses.
"All the kids kept trying to grab for the gold ring, and so was old Phoebe, and I was sort of afraid she'd fall off the goddam horse, but I didn't say anything or do anything. The thing with kids is, if they want to grab for the gold ring, you have to let them do it, and not say anything. If they fall off, they fall off, but it's bad if you say anything to them. This shows that Holden has matured throughout the book. at first he wanted to protect all the kids because he didn't want them to end up like him. Holden was learned kids need to make mistakes because it is the only way you can learn.

ROBERT ACKLEY 1.) Robert Ackley is a student from Pencey who roomed next to Holden and Stradlater’s room. Robert was the weird kid at Pencey and barely left his room and socialized. Robert is described to have acne all over his face and he is known for being gross. (Like when he was popping his pimples on Holden’s bed). Holden finds himself hanging out with Ackley more often and Holden grew to like Ackley and they actually become friends. Ackley is catholic and he sings for a choir every Sunday at his Church.
2.) Robert likes to be alone. He rarely leaves his room and seems like he has no friends. Robert is also very weird and he has no manners. He clips his nails in Holden’s room and he did not clean after his mess. Also, he lies on Holden’s bed and started to peel his pimples off his face. He’s also very religious. He goes to church every Sunday and he is part of a choir. This is probably only one of the very few times he leaves his room.
3.) Likes-
· Seems like he is a friend you could talk to when you have a problem
· Devoted to faith
· Seems like a nice kid
· Good student
· Seems organized about time
Dislikes- · Weird
· Gross
· Sometimes annoying
· Lies
· Spites Holden
4.) “He was holding my roommate’s knee supporter up to show me. That guy Ackley’d pick up anything. He even picked up your jockstrap or something.” (Page 24)
-This is when he went inside Holden’s room and picked up Stradlater’s knew supporter.
-This quote shows up how Ackley is annoying. Also, it shows us how he is weird.
“He started cleaning his goddamn fingernails with the end of a match. He was always cleaning his fingernails. It was funny in a way. His teeth were always mossy looking, and his ears were always dirty as hell, but he was always cleaning his fingernails. I guess he thought that made him a very neat guy.” (Page 24)
-This is when Ackley was in his room and he cleaned his fingernails with the end of a match. Holden was somewhat annoyed with this and he thought it was gross.
-This quote shows us why Ackley was known to be disgusting and gross in Pencey. Also, the quote describes how Ackley looks like and he is described to be a gross looking guy.

Holden Caulfield- Chapters 1-8
1) Holden is a teenage boy who struggles mightily in school and maintaining friendships. Holden is tall with abnormal gray hair for such a young age. He also has a red hunting hat which he loves to carry around because of the cold weather. Over the course of the first eight chapters, Holden's personality and struggles are revealed. Holden is usually in a bad mood and easily aggravated by small things that are normally unnoticed by others. Holden also struggles with his roommates as he gets into fights and arguments.
2) Holden has a bad personality as he gets easily aggravated and annoyed by both people and their actions. One strength of Holden would be his ability to stay independent and not rely on anyone else but himself. One weakness of Holden is that he is too judgmental and critical of other people which results in him not getting along with most people. Over the first eight chapters, Holden stays the same as he continues to be judgmental and critical of just about everything. There are several things that make Holden tick including phonies, when people brag, when people blame their faults other things and don't take responsibility.
3) 5 likes- He likes funny books, good hygiene, English class, Phoebe, and alcohol. 5 dislikes- Holden dislikes his childhood, people who are phonies, private schools, movies, and cliques (a group of people who only hang out with their group).
4) “People are always ruining things for you.” Holden says this because he feels like he cannot rely on anyone after all that he has been through throughout his life. Therefore, Holden lives his life independently so that he doesn't have to rely on others to do things. "One of the biggest reasons I left Elkton Hills was because I was surrounded by phonies. That's all. They were coming in the goddam window. For instance, they had this headmaster, Mr. Haas, that was the phoniest bastard I ever met in my life. Ten times worse than old Thurmer. On Sundays, for instance, old Haas went around shaking hands with everybody's parents when they drove up to school. He'd be charming as hell and all. Except if some boy had little old funny-looking parents. You should've seen the way he did with my roommate's parents. I mean if a boy's mother was sort of fat or corny-looking or something, and if somebody's father was one of those guys that wear those suits with very big shoulders and corny black-and-white shoes, then old Haas would just shake hands with them and give them a phony smile and then he'd go talk, for maybe a half an hour, with somebody else's parents. I can't stand that stuff. It drives me crazy. It makes me so depressed I go crazy. I hated that goddam Elkton Hills." Holden says this when he describes his journey from place to place and why he left Elkton Hills. This is when we see Holden's obsession with phonies and why he hates them so much. He thinks that everyone surrounding him are phonies, even though most of them are not.

Chris Noble & Eddie DiTolla Sally Hayes 1. Sally Hayes used to be Holden’s friend in the book. She likes to wear short skirts and can also be considered an action seeker. She likes to go to matinees and eat ice cream. She is outgoing because she wants to go ice skating and wants him to trim her Christmas tree. 2. Sally’s personality is that she is always looking for attention and wants Holden to be jealous of her for the guy’s name calling her. A strength of Sally is getting the attention of other boys. A weakness for her is that she gets upset easily. Sally does change over the book because in the beginning Sally used to talk to Holden but at the end since Holden called her a pain in the ass Sally hates him and finds him weird since he wants them to run away. The thing that makes Sally tick is the attention that she needs. Sally is constantly seeking attention throughout Chapter 17, as she wants to show off her body to Holden and the people surrounding her. 3. 5 likes of Sally is that 1. See likes to see matinees 2. She is an attention seeker 3. Always wears short skirts 4. Shallow or predictable 5. likes ice cream 5 Dislikes of Sally 1. Annoying 2. Moronic 3. Dim person 4. Because of phoniness makes Holden make bad decisions 5. Self- centered Two Important Quotes 1) “ ‘Let’s go ice-skating at Radio City!”’ (page 167) a) Sally Hayes said this quote to Holden after Sally and Holden saw a play together. b) This quote shows that Sally wants to show off her body to Holden and other people. 2) “She wanted to see herself in one of those little skirts that just come down over their butt and all.” (page 167) a) This quote was thought by Holden, but he didn’t say it to Sally. Holden thought this quote when Sally and him were talking about going ice skating at Radio City. b) This quote shows that Sally likes to get other people’s attention and Holden knows it.

Kevin McMahon Phill Gay Name of Character: Jane Gallagher Description: Jane Gallagher is Holden’s love interest in the novel. As a part of being Holden’s love interest she was also Holden’s childhood friend when he went to Connecticut for the summer. She had comforted Holden after the death of his brother Allie. She had a rough childhood with her parents being divorced and having a booze hound as a stepfather. She found comfort in Holden as well. Throughout the book she goes out with Stradlater and is in many of Holden’s flashbacks when they used to hang out and when they used to comfort each other. Holden in the book also attempts to call her many times. Analysis: Jane is a good friend to Holden and seem to have to have a good personality. She would be able to comfort Holden in many situations and is a sense of right and wrong for Holden throughout the book. Her strengths include comforting, dancing, and being emotionally stable. Some of her weaknesses include the poor childhood she had. As a result of being only mentioned in Flashback and potential phone calls we really don’t see much change in her throughout the book. Likes: Dancing, checkers, tennis, Holden, her dog, her legs, Dislikes: Her step-father, moving her kings forward, not dancing, disrespect from guys, Holden (Anything more than a friend) Quotes: “She’s a dancer, I said. Ballet and all. She used to practice about two hours every day right in the middle of the hottest weather and all. She worried that it’ll make her legs – lousy all thick and all”. - This quote shows the inside mind of Jane, her likes and dislikes, and what she does on a daily basis when Holden was telling Stradlater some things about her. “All I ever saw him do was booze all the time and listen to every goddam house naked. With Jane around and all”. - This quote occurs when Holden was telling Stradlater things about Jane before his date. This quote shows the bad childhood Jane had.

Allie Caufield 1. Allie is Holden’s younger brother. He has red hair, and died at the age of ten. He wrote poems on his baseball glove and was given the idea by D.B. He seems to be the source of Holden’s emotional struggles and down falls. Allie is also the reason Holden latches on to Jane. 2. According to Holden, Allie is very kind, innocent, and highly intelligent. He has no obvious weaknesses, but I imagine Allie would be almost too kind and innocent to a fault. Allie’s character stays the same throughout the book in Holden’s mind, and is clearly highly regarded. 3. Likes Dislikes Baseball Cruel People Boats Movies Biking Stupidity Writing and Poems Family and Friends
4. 1) “You’d [Allie] have liked him. He was two years younger than I was, but he was about fifty times as intelligent.” (p.38). This was said when Holden got distracted writing Stradlaters story about Allie’s baseball mitt. It is significant because Allie is one of the few people Holden complements. 2) “God, he [Allie] was a nice kid, though. He used to laugh so hard at something he thought of at the dinner table that he just about fell off his chair.” (p.38). This quote acknowledges Allie’s spirit and innocence that Holden never stops talking about.

Thomas Laible and Jack Tuffy Phoebe Caufield
Phoebe is Holden's 10 year old sister. She is smart, neat, and a wonderful dancer. She is one of the only people Holden truly cares about. Without her Holden would be completely lost in his life. Unlike Holden she believes that growing up is a necessary thing in life. She is very mature throughout the book. Phoebe is described as by Holden as an intelligent girl who knows a lot more than most ten year olds. She realizes that Holden is his own worst enemy and for a ten year old that is an extremely good observation. Phoebe cares about Holden a lot and wants the best for him. She knows him the best. When Holden comes home at first Phoebe is extremely excited to see him but soon realizes that he's home to early and probably got kicked out. Likes/Dislikes: hates when Holden is in trouble, she likes to see Holden, she enjoys dancing, she doesn't like the kid who punched her in the face, she likes to sleep in D.B.'s bed, she likes being mature, she doesn't like when Holden is away, she likes the park, she dislikes Holden's attitude of life, she doesn't like how, she doesn't like phonies like Holden 4.
Quote #1- "You'd like her. I mean if you tell old Phoebe something, she knows exactly what the hell you're talking about. I mean you can even take her anywhere with you. If you take her to a lousy movie, for instance, she knows it's a lousy movie. If you take her to a pretty good movie, she knows it's a pretty good movie." This qoute shows that phoebe is not only the smartest kid ever but the best little sister in Holden's eyes. This reveals how much Holden loves his little sister.
Quote #2 - "You don't like anything that's happening." Phoebe points out that he hates everything. This reveals he won't admit that he hates everything. His depression shows it for him

Luis Santana and Marty Steffens The characters that we got are Sunny and Maurice. A little description of Sunny, the prostitute, is that she is a blonde, and looks very young, around the age of Holden. Some other things that we were able to get from the book are that she was pretty skinny and had a whinny voice. In Maurice, the pimp, we weren’t able to find a lot. But what we found was that he was a huge man with a hairy stomach. Maurice is a mean con-man. He tricked Holden for buying a prostitute for ten dollars when Holden was told it was 5 dollars. He is angry when Holden doesn't pay the fee so angry in fact he punches Holden in the stomach. Since he is such a minor character he does not change throughout the novel. Sunny is a prostitute who was with Holden. She is willing to "do it" but Holden only wants to talk. Sunny is troubled to the point of prostitution so she is similar to Holden because he is also very troubled
Likes dislikes 1. Money 2. Being called names 3. Smoking 4. Violence 5. Non-violence Quotes “It was a funny thing to say. It sounded like a real kid. You’d think a prostitute and all would say like hell you are or cut the crap instead of like fun you are” “A throw will cost five bucks and the night will cost fifteen.”
