FIRST! B. I feel like these three chapters are very important towards further understanding Holden's personality because it shows how accustomed and easily Holden can just get up and leave a place without a sliver of remorse. It just goes to show how lost he is in the world and lacks a safe-house to call a home when the going gets tough. C. I have some theories on why Holden lied to the mother of one of the Pencey kids on the train but I am not completely sure if it is the correct answer. I believe that it is because he lives his life as a lie and is afraid of people getting to close to him and caring about him. But I may just be over-thinking this one so can someone explain why he feels the need to lie? E. The girl that Holden eventually talks to over the phone intrigues me slightly even though I know that she is most likely an insignificant character. She demonstrates what kind of people Holden wishes to associate himself with. Obviously from the information we have gathered from the book she is not below prostitution and it just goes to show how low Holden can stoop.

C) I was quite surprised to how Holden refused to talk about the fight between he and his roommate but why would he consider himself lonely if there is another person talking to him. I understand you do not wish to talk about a fight, especially after getting beaten pretty badly, but why is Holden claiming he is lonely despite Ackley being beside him. If he really felt so lonely, why wouldn’t he at least talk to Ackley and make him change the subject to something rather than the fight? “I told him I was only kidding, and then I went over and laid down on Ely’s bed. Boy, did I feel rotten. I never felt so damn lonesome” (Salinger 48).
D) The first part of the ninth chapter was very amusing to me, especially the part where Holden is trying to figure out who to call when he got off the train. He doesn’t want to call his parents so he can stay in a hotel until his winter vacation begins. I don’t understand what this is accomplishing because he will have to tell his parents about him getting kicked out of school eventually, and personally, the sooner the better. Spending his nights at a hotel is simply a big waste of money. “I mean I completely forgot, I was going to shack up in a hotel until my vacation started” (Salinger 60).
E) When Holden is describing what he sees out of the window it was not only ridiculously strange but also very funny. The man who dressed up as a lady admiring himself in the mirror and the couple who were squirting water in each others mouths I found funny.

Nicholas Leong Mr.Thomas English 10 3/9/14 Discussion board I. Responding to Kyle where he says : “I was quite surprised to how Holden refused to talk about the fight between he and his roommate but why would he consider himself lonely if there is another person talking to him. I understand you do not wish to talk about a fight, especially after getting beaten pretty badly, but why is Holden claiming he is lonely despite Ackley being beside him. Boy, did I feel rotten. I never felt so damn lonesome” (Salinger 48)” I think he felt lonely because he thought all Ackley wanted to know was what happen with the fight. E. I was quite surprised when Holden was talking to the mom on the train. I was surprised because I think he was trying to hit on her even though it was a kid he knows’ mom. However, I applaud him for trying. B. I think that the Woman Holden was talking to on the phone will be a significant person in his life in the later part of the book. I think that he will call her again and they will meet up.

D. I liked the quote when Holden saw his neighbors doing weird things: “After he left, I looked out the window for a while, with my coats on and all. I didn’t have anything else to do. You’d be surprised what was going on on the other side of the hotel. They didn’t even bother to pull their shades down. I saw one guy, a gray-haired, very distinguished-looking guy with only his shorts on, do something you wouldn’t believe me if I told you. First he put his suitcase on the bed. Then he took out all these women’s clothes, and put them on” (page 80). I liked this quote because it shows that people who don’t go into New York City everyday can find everything to be weird. I would think this would be weird to see, but I wouldn’t react the way Holden did. E. I think Holden really likes Jane. When he was lying in Ely’s bed, all he could think about was Jane: “I didn’t turn it off right away, though. I just kept laying there on Ely’s bed, thinking about Jane and all. It just drove me stark staring mad when I thought about her and Stradlater parked somewhere in that fat-assed Ed Banky’s car. Every time I thought about it, I felt like jumping out the window” (page 63). Since Holden was acting so jealous, I think he will ask Stradlater a lot of questions about their date and how it went. G. If I was Ackley when Holden walked into his room when he was trying to fall asleep, I would be very mad. Although I wasn’t right for Holden to do this, I guess he thought it was ok because Ackley does the same thing to him all the time.

Eddie DiTolla Mr. Thomas English 10 9 March 2014 Catcher in the Rye Ch. 7-9 I. I agree with Kyle on why Holden refused to talk about the fight between he and his roommate but why would he consider himself lonely if there is another person talking to him. D. I liked Chapter eight a lot because I thought how it was funny that when Morrows mom came on the train Holden said he was a great kid and how he is funny and everybody loves him and that he is not sensitive. “Sensitive. That killed me. That gut Morrow was about as sensitive as a goddam toilet seat” (Salinger 54). H. The scene in the book I chose to write about is when Holden is on the train and talking to Morrow’s mom. Holden is dressed in casual clothes with his red hat on and it is an older train with seats of three only with brown wall paper. Morrow’s mom was wearing nice clothes and she was carrying her huge bag which is a normal duffel bag and with brunette hair and obviously pretty to Holden. When they star smoking the air becomes hazy and smells like the butts of a cigarette.

B) In this reading we get an incite into Holden’s mind and who he hangs around with. We get to see that Holden really comes from a wealthy background and we see where he’s going to go now. We even get to see a laugh as he’s leaving his friend’s apartment to go to a hotel in New York.
C) Where is Holden now, a friend or with some random person? Why does he mention his Grandmother? I mean he starts talking about money, but then just goes off on a tangent about her. Why did he leave the building in such a rush? More importantly, when he was leaving, why did he wake everyone up by yelling? That seems like a butt move. I mean you are leaving in the middle of the night and you just wake everyone from their slumber. He really just wants to be a massive jerk to everyone around him, doesn’t he?
D) I liked the quote, “Sleep tight, ya morons” (Salinger 52) It really is a butt thing he says, because he yells it at the top of his lungs, but it is still funny. Funnier then I actually expected it to be. It really is a defining character moment for Holden; he’s willing to actually do something as butt-like as that just for the sake of doing it. It really just shows what some people will do just to get a laugh. Even making this seem more post-modern this way. You wouldn’t expect something like that from modern stories.

C) I had a question about the quote "But you cant always tell-with somebodys mother, I mean. Mothers are all slightly insane. The thing is, though, I liked old morrows mother. She was all right. "would you care for a cigarette?" I asked her. She looked all around. "I dont believe this is a smoker, Rudolf," she said. Rudolf. That killed me."(Page 55) my question is, what is the main reason that he doesent like everyone elses mother, but he makes an ecxeption for old morrows mother?
E) I just had a comment about one of the lines "It isnt very serious. I have this tiny little tumor on the brain." "Oh no!" She put her hands up to her mouth and all. "Oh ill be alright and everything! Its right near the outside. And its a very tiny one. They can take it out in about two minutes." Then i started reading this timetable I had in my pocket. Just to stop lying. Once i get started, I can go on for hours if I fell like it. No kidding. Hours." I just feel that here he is very disrespectful to the elders and i feel like noone can really be the ones to influence him.
I) Alfred I believe that he is not with just a random person, I feel like it may be a mixture of people and also, remember how he doesent really care about much? Maybe thats because he is a butt and just wanted everyone to know that he was leaving so woke them up.

D. I enjoyed when he was talking to his classmate, Ernest Morrow’s, mother. I liked how he said "Rudolf Schmidt," I told her. I didn't feel like giving her my whole life history. Rudolf Schmidt was the name of the janitor of our dorm” I thought it was pretty funny how he gave her the name of the janitor. He even laughed about it when she kept calling him Rudolf. But I thought it would be even funnier later on if they met again and Ernest was there. That probably would have been a funny situation. E. I could see many things come out of Ackley that night that Holden was sort of bothering him. It shows that one thing that Ackley really cares about is his religion. When Holden says something that Ackley finds as an insult to his religion he sat up. I feel like we got to know Ackley a little better and what he really cares about. I. I agree with Kyle when he says that the actions the people were doing in the windows were funny. But I also found it very strange, the reasons being because they didn’t close the shades, also who would be spitting water into each other’s mouths.

C.) “Do you have to be Catholic and all?” (Page 50) Is Holden religious? Throughout the story so far we don’t really read about him praying to God or something. “Then I really started chucking the old crap around.” (Page 56) Why did Holden lie to Ernest Morrow’s mother? I too would say good things if somebody’s mother asked me but Holden seemed to have taken it to the extremes. He talked about electing him class president and other things. “You know those ducks in that lagoon right near Central Park South? That little lake? By any chance, do you happen to know where they go, the ducks, when it gets all frozen over?” What is up with Holden and those ducks? What so special about them that Holden seems to keep them on his mind?
D.) “I just kept laying there on Ely’s bed, thinking about Jane and all. It drove me stark staring mad when I thought about her and Stradlater parked somewhere in that fat-assed Ed Banky’s car.” (Page 48) This gave it away. I think this line showed that he really like Jane. Why he feels crazy about Jane and Stradlater alone in a car if he didn’t have any feelings for Jane? He felt this way because he liked Jane and the thought of the two in the car parked alone somewhere made him feel uncomfortable.
E.) I was surprised of the way Holden seems to be in trance of women he likes. He admitted it himself. “In my mind, I’m probably the biggest sex maniac you ever saw.” (Page 62)

C) I was shocked how Holden did not talk or brag about the fight. I understand that he lost the fight, but I expected Holden to change the story and say that he won to keep in line with his personality. Also, I did not understand why Holden said that he was lonely even though he was talking to and sitting right next to Ackley. If he wanted to change the conversation from the fight to something else, then why didn't he? “I told him I was only kidding, and then I went over and laid down on Ely’s bed. Boy, did I feel rotten. I never felt so damn lonesome” (Salinger 48).
D) I enjoyed when Holden got off the train and couldn't think of anyone to call but his parents. Holden had said earlier that he does not want to call his parents because he didn't want them to know that he had gotten kicked out of school. “I mean I completely forgot, I was going to shack up in a hotel until my vacation started” (Salinger 60). I liked this because I can relate to this from my experience of getting a bad grade and hiding it so that my parents would not get upset with me.
E) I think that Holden has a crush on Jane. While Holden was relaxing in Ely's bed he could not get his mind off of Jane. Holden shows this when he says, “I didn’t turn it off right away, though. I just kept laying there on Ely’s bed, thinking about Jane and all. It just drove me stark staring mad when I thought about her and Stradlater parked somewhere in that fat-assed Ed Banky’s car. Every time I thought about it, I felt like jumping out the window” (Salinger 63).

Peter Boustani B. Something that I really enjoyed that does not necessarily have to do with plot of the story but I believe has to do with the story as a whole was simply Holdings train ride after leaving school. One, I really felt as though I was in the 1950’s with this train ride scene as it is absolutely nothing like modern day transportation, especially not the New York city public transportation. Having books, food and drinks being able to be bought on the train is such a foreign idea to us of the future, which I found really funny as it was the only time I could ever recall having the previous generation have something during their time that I wish we had today. D. I really liked two parts in these chapters very specifically. One I really like when Holding lied to Ernest’s mother simply because when Holding does things like that I can’t help but laugh as he is so hypocritical. I know for a fact that if someone had done that to Holding, he would have been super pissed, but being that Holding is the way that he is, he would do so despite how he would feel if it had been done to him. The other part I really liked was his leaving the dorm because it felt connected to what we spoke about in class about Holding being broken. I. I agree with Ryan that these chapters show how Holding as a person or character is able to move so easily, and these chapters did feel like they were moving the story along. I felt all of the chapters up until what we are currently up to have been leading to this
