C. I don’t understand why Stradlater would ask Holden to write a composition for him. This doesn’t make any sense since Holden was failing multiple classes and didn’t seem to care about school that much. Maybe Stradlater thought it was fine for Holden to write it because English was the only class that Holden wasn’t failing. D. I liked the quote when Holden was talking about his brother: “You’d have liked him. He was two years younger than I was, but he was about fifty times as intelligent. He was terrifically intelligent. His teachers were always writing letters to my mother, telling her what a pleasure it was having a boy like Allie in their class. And they weren’t just shooting the crap. They really meant it. But it wasn’t just that he was the most intelligent member of the family. He was also the nicest, in lots of ways. He never got mad at anybody” (pages 49-50). I liked this quote because it brings back happy memories for Holden. I think Holden needed these happy memories, especially at this time because he was failing many classes and was not doing well in school. E. I don’t understand what goes on in Ackley’s head. It seems as if he has no regard for who is around him and what he does: “He stuck around till around dinnertime, talking about all the guys at Pencey that he hated their guts, and squeezing this big pimple on his chin. He didn’t even use his handkerchief, if you want to know the truth. I never saw him use one, anyway” (page 45). I don’t think Ackley cares about what he does, but if I was Holden I would bring Ackley to a hygiene class.

C) Although it seems like he is a troubled teenager with maybe a rough past, he never showed it until revealing the death of his little brother. I was confused as to why he never mentioned something earlier, but maybe that’s because he doesn’t want to talk about it. His little brother’s death could be the reason he isn’t doing well in school and flunking all of his classes. Maybe it’s his little brother’s death is killing him from the inside.
D) One part of the chapters I liked a lot was when Holden’s roommate asked him for a favor. Finding out that this favor was an English paper, Caufield was quite surprised at the request because of his poor grades, although, he did have an A in English. “It was very ironical. It really was. ‘I’m the one that’s flunking out of the goddamn place, and you’re asking me to write you a goddamn composition?” (Salinger 28)
E) Over the course of this story so far, Holden has shown his displeasure to several things, and it doesn’t seem like this big list of hatreds will be coming to an end anytime soon. Every single time the story cuts out after a conversation between Holden and someone else or his mind just wanders, there is always something he doesn’t like. He seems like a very picky person, it seems very hard to please. “Ackley kept saying, the whole goddamn game that Coyle had the perfect basketball build. God how I hate that stuff” (Salinger 29).

Eddie DiTolla Mr. Thomas English 10 6 March 2014 Catcher in the Rye Ch. 4-6 I. I agree with Kyle because I to think that Holden has be in great displeasure. D. The lines that I liked in these chapters were ““It was very ironical. It really was. ‘I’m the one that’s flunking out of the goddamn place, and you’re asking me to write you a goddamn composition?” (Salinger 28) I liked this set of lines from chapter four because moments earlier before this moment his friend asks him him if he can do his History homework for him due that Monday. Another reason I liked this set was because why would someone else ask another student who has flunked out of the school and was failing History to write his composition for him. F. The relationship I am going to talk about from these chapters is between Holden and Jane Gallagher. When she was first brought up in conversation between Stradlater and Holden in their room it seemed liked that when Holden was a kid they had good experiences playing checkers together and how she always lined her kings up in the back row and how her dog always used to go into his yard and play.

C) I have a question about the quote ““Hey” I said. “Don’t tell her I got kicked out, willya?” “Okay.” That was the one good thing about Stradlater. You didn’t have to explain every goddamn little thing with him, the way you had to with Ackley. Mostly, I guess, because he wasn’t too interested. That’s really why. Ackley, it was different. Ackley was a very nosy bastard.” Isn’t this like the first time he has met Stradlater? How could he think that he knows him so well? I also think that he is confused about why Ackley asks question. E) Part of my post is about the same quote I used in part C. ““Hey” I said. Ackley was a very nosy bastard.” I just think that Holden is very quick to judge others. He barely even knows Stradlater yet he seems to favor him over Ackley. I honestly think he does this because Stradlater acts more like himself. Therefore, he finds Stradlater to be the better person even if he may not be. I) Well Kyle, I think that is a very good inference, but I personally think that Holden did not mention it earlier because maybe he doesent care. Personally, that is my initial reaction to how the character is in the book. I think that he does bad in school maybe because his parents neglect him and never give him any support to do better. Maybe he didn’t tell us because either your right, or he just thought of it as a non-important part of his life.

The Catcher in the Rye 4-6 I) I can answer Chris’ question. After Stradler was arguing with Holden about why Holden should do it they were talking about the commas and not for Holden to make the paper too god. The teacher liked Holden “’Just don’t make it too good, is all,’ he said. ‘That sonuvabitch Hartzell thinks you’re a hot-shot in English, and he knows your my roommate. So I mean don’t stick all of the commas and stuff in the right place’”. Salinger 28 D) “Shut up, now, Holden,’ he said with his big stupid red face. ‘Just shut up, now.’ You don’t even know if her first name is Jane or Jean ya goddam moron!’ Now, shut up, Holden God Damn it- I’m warning ya’ he said- I really had him going. ‘If you don’t shut up, I’m gonna slam ya one.’” Salinger 44 I liked those lines because I can relate to those words. Every time I get into an argument with my brothers it always had something exactly like this. A) “That’s something else that gives me a royal pain. I mean if you’re good at writing compositions and somebody starts talking about commas. Stradler was always doing that. He wanted you to think that the nly reason he was lousy at writing compositions was because he stuck all of the commas in the wrong place.” This is really really easy to relate to. I, unlike many people I know, follow college basketball very closely, more than any other sport. Now since it is March many many people are trying to talk to me about NCAA basketball because of March Madness. I can agree with Holden because it drives me crazy when people think they know anything about the sport when in actuality they know absolutely nothing.

C) Why does it seem even the littlest things are annoying Holden? Is it because of how he was raised? Why is he so surprised when his friend mentions Jean Gallagher? Does he have a crush on her? or does he just have a bond with her and actually cares for her more than others. Why does he go so in depth about this one girl he met the simmer before? Does anyone else think he has a crush on her? And way was his friend so surprised when he said they played checkers? What was he thinking? Why did he end up being asked to do an english paper for his friend even though he was failing out of the school?
F) It seems that Stradler and Holden are good friends. Even though it seems that Holden gets extremely annoyed by Strandler, it seems that he trusts him and is willing to help him out. I mean who would actually give their work to a random stranger who annoys them so much? I really think that they are actually close friends or relatively good friends. I feel that is going to be very important in the future for Holden.
G) Holden must really be having an unusual time. I mean he’s spending time with a “friend” who just so happens to be dating a girl he seems to have feelings for and to add on he’s being kicked out of school. I would be extremely confused and not have any idea on what to do next.

C) It seems as though Holden is a lazy, aggravated teenager who is disrespectful towards others. When he is watching Stradlater shave, he says that he has a nervous habit of turning the water on and off. "I sat down on the one right next to him and started turning the cold water on and off- this nervous habit I have." (Salinger 26) Why does he have a nervous habit? He seems like a kid who doesn't get bothered by anyone or anything. Did something happen earlier in his childhood that could have had an effect on him?
D) I liked when Holden finally showed that he cared about school. After Stradlater had asked for Holden to do his essay because he was good at english. We have been given the image that Holden performs very poorly in school. "That's something else that gives me a royal pain. I mean if you're good at writing compositions and somebody starts talking about commas." (Salinger 28) Holden said this after Stradlater had told him to not put all the commas in the right spots because he didn't want his essay to be as good as Holden's were. Holden finally shows that he cares about school after Stradlater had complemented him on being very good at english.
E) When Stradlater says, "That sonuvabitch Hartzell thinks you're a hot-shot in English, and he knows you're my roommate." (Salinger 28) I was surprised and happy to see that Holden was actually successful in a subject in school. He made it seem that he was didn't care about school and failed every subject. It was nice to see that Holden at least took pride in some aspect of his education.

Nicholas Leong Mr.Thomas English 10 3/6/14 Discussion board
B. One part of the chapter that changed the mood of the story was when he and his roommate were arguing and he punched stradtlater either in the face or somewhere on his body. Next thing you know he is under Stradlater and got cracked in the face so good his nose was gushing blood out.. C.One thing that seemed kind of off was where Stradlater asked Holden to write his essay for him. After Holden actually did it and spent a good amount of time on it, Stradlater made fun of it. I. I agree with Alfred where he says “F) It seems that Stradler and Holden are good friends. Even though it seems that Holden gets extremely annoyed by Strandler, it seems that he trusts him and is willing to help him out. I mean who would actually give their work to a random stranger who annoys them so much? I really think that they are actually close friends or relatively good friends. I feel that is going to be very important in the future for Holden.” I also think that they are almost like brothers in that they fight like brothers and do stuff to annoy each other.
