Eddie DiTolla Mr. Thomas English 10 23 September 2013 The odyssey Book 8 lines 1-299 A. The lines that I chose that relate to a social experience is “ Now we go again and test ourselves in contests games of every kind- so our guest can tell his friends, when he reaches home, how far we have excel the world at boxing, wrestling, jumping, peed of foot.” Pg. 194 lines 118- 121. The event that I chose to describe these to is the Olympics around the world. These lines help describe the Olympics because of all the sports except for boxing are related to the Olympics and how the Greek were the first ones to invent these games. The problem now a day is that the committee is not sure if they should keep the next winter Olympics in Sochi Russia because of all of the trouble that has been going on right now. Lastly, these remind of the Olympics because of how much fun they are to watch. D. Some lines that I like were “I’m no stranger to sports – for all your taunts – I’ve held my place in the front ranks, I tell you, long as I could trust to my youth and striving hands. But now I’m borne my share of struggles, cleaving my way through wars of men and pounding waves at sea. Nevertheless, despite so many blows, I’ll compete in your games, just watch. Your insults cut to quick – you rose my fighting blood!” pg 197 lines 207- 216. I like these lines because it shows that Odysseus is not being pious. This also shows that he is talking about all of the wars and how he struggled with pain and hardship and the people are to quick to judge him. E. The Character that I like in this chapter is King Alcinous. I like this character because it seems like whenever some person comes into the town it seems that they always have a celebration. It shows in this quote that they are going to a party to have for Odysseus “ With those commands Alcinous led the way and a file of sceptered princes took his lead while the herald went to find the gifted bared.” pg 193 lines 54-56

D. When Athena said “Come this way, you lords and captains of Phaeacia, come to the meeting grounds and learn about the stranger! The new arrival! Here at our wise kings’ palace now, he’s here from roving the ocean, driven far off course-he looks like a deathless god” (page 191-192 lines 12-16), she makes him sound like a king. Although he survived his sailing trip and he met with the king and queens and ate with them when he barely knew them, he isn’t a god or anything. Athena makes him sound like a very powerful person with magical powers, but he isn’t. I think Odysseus has a lot of luck, that’s all. F. The relationship between Odysseus and Alcinous is a confusing one. I think Alcinous is using Odysseus in a way. “Now out we go again and test ourselves in contests-games of every kind-so our guest can tell his friends, when he reaches home, how far we excel the world at boxing, wrestling, jumping, speed at foot” (page 194 lines 118-121). I feel that Alcinous is using Odysseus to let other people know how good of a place Phaeacia is, by having boxing matches and other contests that Odysseus might be impressed by. G. If I was Odysseus, I would feel very happy. The king had a feast because of your presence! “The king slaughtered a dozen sheep to feed his guests, eight boars with shining tusks and a pair of shambling oxen” (page 193 lines 68-69). I would be very happy if I was Odysseus because he is getting so much attention from all the Phaeacians.

A.one of my favorite lines in this book/chapter is when Odysseus says "why do you taunt me with such a challenge?" This is one of my favorite lines in this chapter because since I play sports I could know how Odysseus must of felt when the prince out of the sudden just starts to challenge and kind of/ almost mock him I could relate to his rash response. I imagine that in his head Odysseus was kind of taken back by the prince’s harsh remarks.
D. Another of my favorite lines is “I’m no stranger to sports-for all your taunts- I’ve held my place in the front ranks, I tell you.” I like this line because Odysseus seems not only offended but a little angry because of what the prince said. After the prince said that he saw Odysseus as an non-athletic person and a fool, Odysseus went into defense mode and was all like I am very good at sports and I will kick you butt.
C. one question that I had about this half of a chapter is who are the characters Demodocus and Alcinous. Another question that is have is why did the prince want/taunt Odysseus to do the sports event thingy? Is it some sort of tradition to have the newcomers to participate in sports events? Another question that I have is how come the Phoenician’s do not welcome new people that well?

Book 8 Lines 1-299
A. When Broadsea and insults Odysseus in order to get him to participate in the games it remind me of what happens to me sometimes. If I am playing with my brother I might tell him that he knows he’s not good enough to compete and that is why he doesn’t want to play. I know this trick because whenever you insult somebody about their athletic capabilities they decide to join in and play so they can show you that they are actually better than you at sports. It was clever from Broadsea, but also not so clever because Odysseus ended up showing the Phaeacians that he is better than all of them at sports.
C. Why does Athena tell all the Phaeacians to attent the assembly? I feel like the banquet and the games is just a way to prolong Odysseus’ stay on the island.
G. If I were Odysseus I would feel kind of embarrassed and upset right now. Odysseus probably thought that first thing in the morning he would be able to leave, instead he had to attend the banquet and the games. He probably feels embarrassed because the Phaeacians think he’s not good at sports, when Odysseus knows he could beat them in any game. Right now Odysseus might feel that the king has tricked him.

C) Why did the youth decided to suddenly challenge Odysseus to a match? Why did Odysseus decide to actually play against him? Why was he even there to begin with? Why did he completely embarrass the kid by showing his skill? Who even gave the kid the idea to challenge him anyway? Who was this kid compared to Odysseus? Why was he being so disrespectful of the man? It seems like a little boy with no respect to me here. Doesn’t it seem like the kid doesn’t know what respect is? Why was he being so disrespectful?
D) I like the lines, “Indecent talk my friend. You, you’re a reckless fool-I see that.” (Lines 191-192 pg. 197) With this Odysseus is pretty much calling the youth, out for taunting and insulting him; it actually seems like a signal for, “Something awesome is about to happen.” It actually shows Odysseus’ ability to intimidate those who challenge him. It just shows who Odysseus is.
G) As Odysseus, I wouldn’t just accept this challenge from a youth for no reason. I have been through so much and he is telling me to join them in a game I do not know! I say, they would need to show adults some respect and learn when to not approach someone! And I wouldn’t stand for taunts; I would immediately beat them at their own game after that just to teach them a few lessons or just make sure they know that they should respect their elders.

E) One particular character that I enjoyed in the first part of book was King Alchinous. The reason I like King Alchinous because of his vast generosity to the people he rules. As he says in book 8 “Come my people! Haul a black ship down to the bright sea, rigged for her maiden voyage – enlist a crew of fifty – two sailors, the best in town, who’ve proven their strength before. Let all the hands lash their oars to thwarts then disembark, come to my house and fall in for a banquet, quickly”. In this line it shows how the King is open to all people yet he is fair and just. He is willing to give up food for many for his people to enjoy themselves.
F) One relationship that I found good in book 8 was the relationship between King Alchinous and the Phaecian people. This is a good relationship because heKing and the people have a common understanding at treat each other with kindness and respect. One example of this is before the banquet. Here it says “the king slaughtered a dozen sheep to feed his guests, eight boars with shining tusks and a pair of shambling oxen”. This shows how the king and his people only try to please one another and their generosity holds no bounds.
H) If I was designing this scene for a movie I would do it with a lot of activity, movement, and partying. The reason I would do this because at the banquet everybody is having a good time and enjoying themselves. An example of this is when it says “the music inspired the bard to sing the famouse deeds of fighting heroes - the song whose fame reached the skies those days:”.

C) One question that I have about this reading is who Demodocus and Alcinous are? Also, why do the princes want Odysseus to play in the sports event? Lastly, why do the Phaeacians not welcome people the right way?
D) One of my favorite lines in this is, “I’m no stranger to sports- for all your taunts- I’ve held my place in the front ranks, I tell you.”(Book8 Lines 207-208) I like this line because Odysseus seems like he has a little anger and him and he wants to fight back. After the prince had seen how much of a non-athletic person Odysseus was, Odysseus went into defense mode and began to stick up for himself up to the prince.
E) The particular character that I enjoyed in the 299 lines of reading in Book 8 is King Alnico's. I specifically enjoyed him because he was a very generous and effective ruler for his people. He says, “Come, my people! Haul back ship down to the bright sea, rigged for their maiden voyage- enlist a crew of fifty- two sailors, the best in town, who’ve proven their strength before. Let all the hands lash their oars to thwarts then disembark, come to my house and fall in a banquet, quickly.”(Book 8 Lines 38-44) This shows that the king is open to anyone of any situation to prove that he is a fair leader. He is willing to sacrifice his food so that other people can live properly.

D) “Haul a black ship down to the bright sea…” I thought that this was great. The reason for me thinking this is because Odysseus was just a stranger. They never treated him bad. They also gave him sailors to help row the boat. This shows how good people the people on that island are. Then he also says that he has a banquet for Odysseus. I thought that this was all great to give to a stranger that washed up on shore. E) I thought that it seemed that Odysseus didn’t like the noble prince. This is because of what Odysseus says to the noble prince. He said “why do you taunt me with such a challenge?” Why couldn’t Odysseus say just leave me alone or just have said no. But he was tempted into being angry by the guys’ taunts. This is what made me believe he was mad or upset with the noble prince and what he was saying. Another thing is that it was a taunt. It seemed as if Odysseus instead of just saying no he over reacted and got very cocky over the challenge. G. I am going to be acting as the noble prince when he was talking to Odysseus before Odysseus beats the noble prince in the competition. Why was Odysseus so scared to just have competed with me in the competition? It made no sense to me he doesn’t even look like someone who is able to play in these games. I bet that I will beat him any time or day in any challenge. He doesn’t even look like he can compare to me he’s just looks so untalented.
