Eddie DiTolla Mr. Thomas English 10 22 September 2013 The Odyssey Book 7 D. The lines that I enjoyed from book seven are “ here luxuriant trees are always in their prime, pomegranates and pears, and apples glowing red succulent figs and olives swelling sleek and dark, And the yield of all these trees will never flag or die, neither in winter nor in summer, a harvest all year round for the West Wind always breathing through will bring some fruits to the bud and others warm to ripeness pear mellowing ripe on pear, apple on apple cluster of grapes on cluster, fig crowding fig.” (Pg. 183 lines 132-141) I enjoyed these lines because it says that the fruit will never go bad and that it will always be fresh. In line l32 when it says “ Here luxuriant trees are always in their prime” it means that the tree s are always at their best making fruit; just like how the apples are glowing red and the figs. Another reason I liked this lines was because in line 136 “Neither in winter nor in summer, a harvest all year round.” means that the gods blessed the garden for them so they can have fruit all year round. E. The character that I chose to talk about is Athena. My favorite is when “As he was about to enter the welcome city, the bright-eyed goddess herself came up to greet him there, for the entire world like a young girl.” I find this to be a little funny that Athena changed into a little girl of all the types of people to be. I like when Athena and Odysseus are walking to Alcinous palace she protects him with a cloud of mist and he doesn’t notice that it is a god doing that to protect him since the people don’t like new comers. H. The scene I am going to create is the part when Odysseus is in the garden and he sees all of the trees and how big they are. Odysseus is wearing the clothes he got from Nausicaa and when he enters the palace he sees two golden dog statues and then he is looking around curiously. When he walks into the garden he is amazed by all of the different types of trees he sees like apple, pear, fig, olives, and clusters of grapes. The scene would kind of be like Willy Wonka with a water fall with green everywhere and instead of candy there are all different types of fruit trees and he is stunned with all the fruit going acres deep.

D. I liked the quote “Outside the courtyard, fronting the high gates, a magnificent orchard stretches four acres deep with a strong fence running round it side-to-side. Here luxuriant trees are always in their prime, pomegranates and pears, and apples glowing red, succulent figs and olives swelling sleek and dark” (page 183 lines 129-134). I liked this quote because Odysseus was trapped for seven years but now he was at a royal family’s home eating dinner with them. It shows that Odysseus is a lucky man for both surviving his sailing trip and because he was in this amazing place. E. When King Alcinous prayed for Odysseus, I was very surprised. “And all that voyage long you’ll lie in a deep sleep while my people sail you through calm and gentle tides till you reach your land and house, or any place you please” (page 189 lines 365-367). I would never think that a king would be praying for and offering so much for someone that he barely knows. King Alcinous and Queen Arete know nothing about Odysseus except that he was trapped for seven years and that he barely survived his sailing trip to the Phaeacian’s city. I couldn’t believe this was really happening. G. If I was Odysseus, I would feel very happy. He came to a land where he knew nobody, but now he was eating a meal with the King and Queen of the land and sleeping in their mansion. “Torches in hand, they left the hall and fell to work at once, briskly prepared a good snug resting- place and returned to Odysseus, urged the guest, ‘Up my friend, time for sleep.’” (page 190 lines 388-392).

G. If I were the king I would of still welcomed Odysseus because I would of felt bad for him as a person because I could only imagine if I was king and somebody showed up on my island alone with barely any supplies.
E. Throughout the book, we get to see Athena as a guardian angel and try to help Odysseus. I feel like she is starting to care for Odysseus and his wellbeing. I agree with Eddie Ditola where he says: My favorite is when “As he was about to enter the welcome city, the bright-eyed goddess herself came up to greet him there, for the entire world like a young girl.” I agree with him because I thought it was interesting how a goddess came up to greet Odysseus. I wonder if Poseidon was looking for Odysseus wouldn’t he be able to see through Athena’s disguise? After all he is the brother of Zeus, which means he is still more powerful than Athena.
C. I have a question for anybody that could answer. My question is, after Odysseus goes home, will Athena reveal herself as the one who has been helping Odysseus throughout the book? How will he react to that? My guess is shocked because I think he doesn’t know why any God/ Goddess would help him through his struggle because he knows Poseidon is after him and any god and Goddess would be an idiot to try and help him behind Poseidon’s back.

D) One line that I enjoyed in book 7 of “The Odyssey” that I enjoyed was when Odysseus was describing the palace when he entered in for the first time. Here it says “Outside the courtyard, fronting the high gates, a magnificent orchard stretches four acres deep with a strong fence running round it side - to – side. Here luxuriant trees are always in their prime, pomegranates and peats, and apples glowing red, succulent figs and olives swelling sleek and dark. And here is a teeming vineyard planted for the kings, beyond it an open level bank where the vintage grapes lie baking to raisins in the sun while pickers gather other:;”. I like this line because it shows the beauty of the palace and the country.
E) One particular character that I found to be nice was the King Alcinous. The reason I found him nice because the first time he met Odysseus he treated him with respect and like he was royalty. One example that shows how nice he is nice is when Odysseus is at the supper. It says here “You’ll see yourself how far they top the best – my ships and their young shipmates tossing up whitecaps with their oars!” Here it shows how King Alcinous is giving Odysseus ships and men to make it back home.
F) One relationship that I found good in this book was the relationship between Athena and Odysseus. The reason I found this relationship good because Athena helped Odysseus get to the palace. “I’ll show you the very palace that you’re after – the king lives right beside my noble father.”. Here she explains how to get to the king and shows secretly that the king is in favor to the gods.

C) Why was the king so welcoming of Odysseus, a stranger to their town? Why did Odysseus trust this little girl? Even after she tells him about the culture of the people? (Lines 30-41) Why did Odysseus trust the king or anyone in the city? Who sent this girl to be his guide?
G) If I were Odysseus I wouldn’t trust anyone there. I mean we’re told at the beginning of the book that the towns people don’t trust outsiders and have been know to harm them. And to just walk into their town unknown with any connections, going to their castle. I would be very suspicious if I saw people being nice after being told what usually happens to outsiders. I wouldn’t trust anyone there until I was sure that they mean no harm and it would take a while for that to happen. It is a dangerous situation it seems Odysseus has gotten into in this book.
I) Nicholas Leong, so far it doesn’t seem like Athena is planning to reveal herself to Odysseus. Although if she does, Odysseus would probably be shocked, at both the help he was getting and all the garbage he is going through to get home. It really doesn’t look like a goddess is helping him through all of his struggles when really, she is. So far she is being really sneaky helping him out, that is probably why she is hiding herself in the first place, so Poseidon won’t find out about her meddling.

The Odyssey Book 7 F) Now I am starting to like Athena more than I did before. I was a little suspicious of her trying to be greedy but now I think that she just feels bad for Odysseus. “As he was about to enter the welcome city, the bright-eyed goddess herself came up to greet him there, for the entire world like a young girl.” This quote really expresses how Athena feels for Odysseus. I am starting to like her more because I do not think she is angry at Poseidon. That is why the relationship between the two of them grew. E) I enjoyed the King Alcinous. He was very generous. So generous in fact he offered his own daughters hand in marriage to this almost complete stranger. I do not think that was a stupid move where I usually would think that. I did not because Nausicaa is getting to the age of when she should be married. Also Alcinous will give everything Odysseus need to get back home including a ship. “You’ll see yourself how far they top the best – my ships and their young shipmates tossing up whitecaps with their oars!” G) Now I feel is the perfect time to be Odysseus. He is welcomed by the king and queen. Also he is receiving a ship to travel back home. I have a feeling that the tides will turn very quickly though because we are just about halfway through the epic. That means me wanted to be Odysseus will change probably early in the 8th book.

The Odyssey Book 7
C. Zeus, why would you strike a lightning bolt on Odysseus’ ship if he was at sea trying to return home. This doesn’t make a lot of sense because you are now helping Odysseus return home, when you were the one who killed his mates and got him stranded on Calypso’s torturous island.
D. I liked when Odysseus said, “Your majesty don’t find fault with a flawless daughter now, not for my sake, please.” I enjoyed this line because it shows how respectful Odysseus really is. He tells the king that he was grateful enough for his daughter to even offer him a trip to the palace. King Alcinous is upset that his daughter did not escort Odysseus to the palace, but Odysseus tells the king that it was he that didn’t accept the invitation to be escorted. I think this quote gives us a good look at the true character Odysseus is.
G. If think that Odysseus feels relieved and thankful at the end of book seven. I think he would feel this way because his prayer to Athena has been answered. He asked Athena for hospitality and kindness while at the king’s house and he has received even more than that. The king has feed Odysseus to his no end and the king has even prepared a room for Odysseus to sleep in. Even though those are nice things I think the most important think promised is a convoy in the morning so he can return back to his loved ones in Ithaca.

Book 7
C. I am extremely confused on why Athena does not just come down as herself and not as a little girl in disguise, Odysseus already knows who she is and that she is helping him, just go down and help him not in disguise. I also am a little confused on why the King of the Phaecians, Arete, wants Odysseus to marry his daughter. Odysseus explains his story to him, and he has been having a lot of bad luck why would he want that in his family and possibly rule his city down the road.
I. @nickleong I believe that Odysseus knows that Athena is helping her because earlier in the story he prays to her, so why would he pray to her and not know who she was.
G. If i were the King of Phaecia I would not want Odysseus to marry my daughter because Odysseus has had trouble with Poseidon and they had a festival to worship him and Poseidon would be upset with the city and possibly cause a storm that would ruin the city. (i believe that the king does not know of all the troubles between poseidon and odysseus but if he did I would not want them to marry.)

C) Why does Athena disguise herself to Odysseus? Odysseus asked her to help him so why should she have to disguise herself to him? “As he was about to enter the city, the bright eyed goddess herself came up to greet him there.” (Book 7 Lines 20-22) Athena has already helped him enough to this point why would she continue to help him?
D) I personally like when Odysseus is guided by Athena, who at the time was disguised as the bright eyed girl. Athena helps Odysseus get to the palace by guiding him and encouraging him telling him to be bold and not afraid for there is great people waiting for him. “I’ve guided you all the way. Here you’ll find our princes dear to the Gods, busy feasting. Be bold, nothing to fear. (Book 7 Lines 56-57). I also like the fact that Odysseus doesn’t know it’s Athena either.
F) Athena and Odysseus have a great relationship. Athena watches over Odysseus through his journey even though sometimes he doesn’t know it’s her because she is always disguising herself. Odysseus is very appreciative of what she does for him. Athena is in disguise and guiding Odysseus to the palace when she says “I’ll show you the very palace that you’re after, the king lives right beside my noble father. Come, quietly too, and I will lead the way.” (Book 7 Lines 32-34) Athena shows much sympathy and love for Odysseus by doing all of this. She feels bad for all of the pain he has gone through and has guided him along his seemingly endless journey.

D. I really liked the description of palace on page 183 second paragraph. It talks about its beauty and Odysseus is awed by this. By the sound of the descriptions, it seems like it is an extremely peaceful place. It says that there is always harvest all year long. It also talks about several fruits and the trees surrounding the place, which gives it a somewhat sunny feeling while I read it. At the end of the page, it talks about how Odysseus is amazed by this sight, which shows how amazing the scene is.
E. I think the queen is very kind. “This is no way, Alcinous. How indecent, look, our guest on the ground, in the ashes by the fire!” When she sees Odysseus she immediately offered him help and she gave him her hospitality. She tells them to seat him in a silver-studded chair, give him wine, and serve him supper.
C. “the bright-eyed goddess herself came up to greet him there, for all the world like a young girl, holding a pitcher, standing face-to-face with the visitor” Why did Athena have to disguise herself? When is she going to finally show herself to Odysseus and tell him that she is helping him to get home?

C) Is there any time that a god or a goddess is ugly? Are all god and goddess called beautiful, handsome, or good looking? Will there be any time that there’s just a normal looking goddess or god not just described as beautiful? I was wondering this as I was reading because of the descriptions of Athena. They say as I read “The bright-eyed goddess…” They also said “Athena the one with lovely braids…” D) I really liked the line “… a magnificent orchard stretches four acres deep…” I thought that this was a great line because it creates a picture in your head. Especially with the addition of the things that are being planted such as the glowing red apples and succulent figs and olives that makes the image become even better. In my head I think that with all the differences in color it would be a great sight to see. I thought it would be good to talk about because it could create illustrations in others heads. F) One relationship that I believe is really good is the relationship between Athena and Odysseus. This is for the fact that Athena is the one changing things around him to protect him. For example “Harboring kindness for the hero, drifted a heavy mist around him, shielding him…” This especially shows that it is a good relationship because she is protecting him from the many dangers he may experience. Another reason why you may say it is a good example of a great relationship is because Odysseus wouldn’t have gone so far without Athena’s guidance.

C. I still feel very confused as to why Athena is taking such an interest into Odysseus, though my previous question about why Athena took such a more difficult approach to contacting Odysseus and getting him to safety, which I assume is so Poseidon does not find out that she is helping the man which Poseidon loathes. Despite this though I want to know why it is Athena taking the initiative to save Odysseus and why she has this odd care for him, and as the goddess of wisdom/warfare, and odysseus being a soldier, I sense that their might be something todo with that slight relationship. D. A part that I thought was interesting was Odysseus once again getting out of a situation with his talent and way with words as he proves that he was not with Naussica upon entering to see the king and queen. This is always entertaining to watch but what I particularly found interesting was that for the first time that us as the audience have seen Odysseus' skill being used and then a negative being placed upon him, depending on the way you see things. This is because at this point, Odysseus is asked to marry Naussica by her father which is obviously not apart of Odysseus' plan. I. I agree with Chris Noble in the in that I felt similarly surprised in how the king had reacted to Odysseus. We know that Athena has been playing with everyone's perception of Odysseus which could help as to explaining why the king went as far as to praying for Odysseus and even offering his daughter in marriage. Typically in this story, things tend to not go well at all for Odysseus yet this time things seem to be going his way very much.
