C) One thing I was confused about was the actions of the Cyclops. Why did the Cyclops only eat two of Odysseus’ men at a time? This Cyclops was a pretty large figure so I was just wondering if he was evenly spreading out his meals. Also, it says that Odysseus and his men prayed to the Gods when it says: “We flung our arms to Zeus, we wept and cried aloud, looking on at his grisly work-paralyzed, appalled. But once the cyclops had stuffed his enormous gut with human flesh, washing it down with raw milk, he slept in his cave, stretching out along his flocks.” (Book 9 Lines 331-335) I was just thinking that why would the Cyclops take the chance of allowing Zeus to hear the prayers of Odysseus’ men?
D) There was a part in the story where the Cyclops is responding to Odysseus when Odysseus says where he came from and why he is in the cave of the Cyclops. Odysseus had previously mentioned that Zeus was a protector of them and that they had the Gods on their side so the Cyclops should be friendly to them. To Odysseus’ surprise, the Cyclops has a different opinion of the Gods: “‘Stranger’ he grumbled back from his brutal heart, ‘you must be a fool, stranger, or come from nowhere, telling me to fear the Gods or avoid their wrath! We Cyclops never blink at Zeus and Zeus’ shield of storm and thunder, or any other blessed God, we’ve got more force by far.” (Book 9 Lines 306-311) Here, Odysseus tries to use the Gods as protection and it works in the opposite way.
F) One thing I noticed was the relationship between Odysseus and his men. Although they all listen to him and his commands, they should be upset with him. After all, it is his fault that 6 people died. Odysseus wanted to meet the Cyclops but the men wanted to leave the island before he ever knew they were there. Odysseus refused, and it ended up resulting like this: “Lurching up, he lunged out with his hands toward my men snatching two at once, rapping them on the ground he knocked them dead like pups, their brains gushed out all over, soaked the floor and ripping them limb from limb to fix his meal.” (Book 9 Lines 324-328)

B) Finally some action! The story really kicks up from here. We finally know why Poseidon hates Odysseus’ guts and attacks him. Without this part we wouldn’t have any idea what happened before the events of the Odyssey. We need this book to explain pretty much how we got to where we are. It is surprising that, the reason Poseidon hates Odysseus is because of the Cyclops.
C) Why did Odysseus get the Cyclops drunk before the fight? Was it to weaken him or confuse or do what to him? Why does he say the wine is like nectar? (Lines 404- 406) Is it really that good? Why did he fight with Odysseus? Out of drunken rage or spite? Why did the Cyclops believe that the person going to gouge out his eye was going to be the perfect vision of the warrior, tall and strong instead of what Odysseus is? It confuses me why he wasn’t suspicious about all the people there.
D) A line I liked was, “Oh no, no- that prophecy years ago… it all comes to me with a vengeance now!” (Lines 564-565). Its funny to know that the Cyclops actually knew this was going to happen to him, and this line pretty much says, “I should’ve seen this coming!” It opens the line so I can be explained how a prophet told him his eye was going to be gouged out. He was so naïve to think that wouldn’t happen! He should’ve been suspicious of everyone who came randomly to the shore, I know I would’ve been.

E: I found the Cyclops, Polyphemus, a very interesting character. He was a lawless brute/ruthless brute, meaning he had no morals or guidelines in his life. Obviously being a giant, he is dead set and lives in his cave. He is a loner and separates himself from the rest of the Cyclopes. He has no problem with picking up Odysseus' men and throwing them to break their necks and crush their heads, after this he eats the men, he continues on his routine after eating two humans. B: I find Odysseus' use of the name "nobody" very clever and interesting. He says to the Cyclops, "Nobody-that's my name. Nobody-so my mother and father call me." Later on when the giant tries to tell his friends who stabbed him he says, "'Nobody', friends-Polyphemus bellowed back from his cave-'nobody's killing me now by fraud and not by force!'" This gets Odysseus off the hook because the other giants think that he is crazy and don not take the statement seriously. C: My question was why did Odysseus need to go out of the cave on the sheep, why couldn't he and his men simply walk out since the they had blinded the giant?

Eddie DiTolla Mr. Thomas English 10 2 October 2013 Odyssey Book 9 lines 288-630 C. There was a little confusion for me in the beginning around 320 – 330. I wasn’t sure who was killing who? I think it is Poseidon but I also think it are the Cyclops. “Not a word in reply to that, the ruthless brute. Lurching up, he lunged out with his hands toward my men and snatching two at once, rapping them to the ground he knocked them like dead pups- their brains gushed out all over, soaked the floor- and ripping them limb from limb to fix his meal he bolted them down like a mountain – lion, left no scrap, devoured entrails, flesh and bones, marrow and all!” This confuses me because I am not sure he is talking about Poseidon, the Cyclops, or animals destroying the sailors, or Zeus because it says he bolted them down like a mountain top. D. Some lines that I like in this part of the book and also found funny were “When young Dawn with her rose-red fingers shone once more the monster relit his fire and milked his handsome ewes, each vin order, putting a suckling underneath each dam, and as soon as he’d briskly finished all his chores he snatched p two more men and fixed his meal. Well-fed, he drove his fat sheep from the cave lightly lifting the huge door slab up and away, and then slipped it back in place.” Pg. 221 lines 244- 251 I like these lines because I don’t think that the Cyclops would take care of the sheep or ewes at all. I was surprised that they take that good care on how they milk the ewes and let the sheep roam around and keep them organized. H. I am going to do the scene when it talks about the Cyclops are milking the ewes and taking care of the animals. If I was a set director it would be like Calypso’s island and there would be like ten or fifteen Cyclops. There would be a small path of prairie land where the sheep roam and big caves with animal makings on the wall where the Cyclops live and they would be carrying the clubs the Flintstones carry.

D. “With that he toppled over, sprawled full-length, flat on his back and lay there, his massive neck slumping to one side, and sleep that conquers all overwhelmed him now as wine came spurting, flooding up from his gullet with chunks of human flesh-he vomited, blind drunk” (page 223 lines 314-319) I liked this quote because I thought it was very funny. I can’t even imagine a drunk Cyclops that fell straight to the floor with wine and human body chunks coming out of his mouth. If I was watching this in real life, I would probably be laughing more than I would be afraid. E. Now I know the significant of the wine that Odysseus brought into the cave. It helped them escape! The wine was the biggest part of Odysseus’s plan. He got the Cyclops drunk from the wine and executed the rest of the plan perfectly. “Here Cyclops, try this wine-to top it off the banquet of human flesh that you’ve bolted down” (page 222 lines 388-389). I. I agree with Kyle’s statement when he asks, why would the Cyclops take the chance of allowing Zeus to hear the prayers of Odysseus’s men? I don’t understand either. Maybe it has something to do with being Poseidon’s, but I’m not exactly one hundred percent sure. If Zeus would have heard the cries and prayers of Odysseus’s men, there would be a good chance that the Cyclops would have a lot of problems coming his way, just like the problems that Odysseus had when he was sailing away from the island of Calypso.

Book 9 Lines 288-630
D. On page 224 I enjoyed the lines when Polyphemus the Cyclops said, “Nobody friends, Nobody’s killing me now fraud and not by force?” These lines were amusing to me because it made Polyphemus look dumb in front of his friends. Polyphemus says that Nobody killed him, and the other Cyclopes don’t know that Nobody was the fake name Odysseus told Polyphemus. Then at the end the others think Polyphemus is mad or insane and tell him to pray to Poseidon.
E. Odysseus really shows his cleverness in this book. First he manages to get Polyphemus to drink another bowl of wine which ends up getting him drunk. Then he comes up with a brilliant plan and jabs a burning club in Polyphemus’ eye to blind him while he drunk. Later Odysseus fakes his name to Nobody, which Polyphemus buys without questioning. This trick is really what allows Odysseus to safely escape the cave because the other Cyclopes don’t know that Nobody was Odysseus name so they leave. Odysseus was very smart and managed to outsmart Polyphemus in every situation. This part of book nine was also very amusing.
G. If I was Odysseus right know I would feel very relieved. Odysseus was really riding on luck the whole time hoping that his plane would go through as planed without any difficulties. The plane did work and he also got to steal the rams he wanted. I think the biggest plus though is that he got to escape the island safely even though Polyphemus and Poseidon did attempt to kill Odysseus while at sea. Odysseus got everything he wanted from this trip so he can consider this a great success.

C) I was really confused about why did the Cyclops eat the men was it that he was just really hungry or was he trying to prove a point or is that just the Cyclops nature in doing that. I also wanted to know why did he guard the sheep os much why didn’t he just eat them too and not eat the men.
H) The scene that I am going to talk about is when the Cyclops takes one of Odysseus men and just east them like nothing. If I was the director or if I was in the play I would imagine a very bloody scene and I just picture a big tall giant that just rips into the human like someone would eat a steak. You can hear the bone crushing from when the Cyclops chops on the mans lifeless body.
F) One thing I want to point out is that the relationship between the Cyclops and the sheep. How is it that a docile and small little animal is being defended by a big, strong, tall Cyclops that is killing men. Why if he does all that to the men why cant he just do that too the sheep if that is his nature or is just e man eating machine.

I.
I agree with Alfred where he clearly states: “Finally some action! The story really kicks up from here. We finally know why Poseidon hates Odysseus’ guts and attacks him. Without this part we wouldn’t have any idea what happened before the events of the Odyssey.” I agree with him that this book finally picked up on the action and it was not as boring.
D. One of my favorite parts in this book is where Odysseus states that his name is Nobody. I thought this was pretty intelligent because when the Cyclops tried to call for help to his other Cyclops friends, He screamed “Help Nobody is attacking me” and all the other Cyclops just ignored him because they thought he was playing a joke on them that he was getting attacked.
F. I feel like if I were the crew mates of Odysseus, I would hate him. I would hate him because he was the real reason why 6 people died. Odysseus could of just said yes to the plan of robbing the Cyclops but he had to let his curiosity get the best of him and he just had to meet the cyclops. He had a chance to get out of the cave without the cyclops even knowing that they were there. I truly feel he was the reason why 6 people died

B) In this reading, we finally find out why Poseidon hates Odysseus. This book is important because it fills us in on what has happened up to this point. Without this book, we would have no clue what happened before the Odyssey. This book is the uprising of the Odyssey because we finally hear about Odysseus' experience at Troy and his relationship with Poseidon.
C) What really seems to perplex me is when Odysseus and his men pray to Zeus. It says, "We flung our arms to Zeus, we wept and cried aloud, looking on at his grisly work-paralyzed, appalled. But once the cyclops had stuffed his enormous gut with human flesh, washing it down with raw milk, he slept in his cave, stretching out along his flocks.” (Book 9 Lines 331-335) This is not the action that confuses me, it is when the Cyclops does not stop Odysseus and his men from praying to Zeus, the most powerful god. Why would the Cyclops take the chance of allowing Zeus to hear the men's prayers?
F) The one thing that I noticed was Odysseus' men's loyalty to him. They still stay loyal to Odysseus and follow his order despite the fact it is his fault they are with the cyclops. It is Odysseus' fault that six people have died. When Odysseus' men want to leave the island of the cyclops, the situation ends up like this: "Lurching up, he lunged out with his hands toward my men snatching two at once, rapping them on the ground he knocked them dead like pups, their brains gushed out all over, soaked the floor and ripping them limb from limb to fix his meal.” (Book 9 Lines 324-328)

D) One line that I particularly enjoyed was the line in which I enjoyed was the line in which Odysseus tricked the Cyclopes by telling him that his name was nobody. It states “Nobody- that’s my name. Nobody- so my mother and father call me, all my friends.”. The reason I liked this line because it helps lead up to the rest of Odysseus plan. This also allows him to get him and his men from the evil clutches of the Cyclopes. It also allowed him not only for him to save his men but if his planned failed then he would be the last one to survive and allow him to think of a new and better plan.
E) One character that I did not like in this reading was the Cyclopes. The reason I did not like the Cyclopes was because he believed he was able to do whatever he wanted and the rules of the Gods did not apply to him. Another reason I did not like him was because the Cyclopes brutally murdered Odysseus men just for food. As it says “We Cyclopes never blink at Zeus and Zeus’s shield of storm or thunder, or any other blessed god- we’ve got more force by far.”. This line makes him think he is better than the Gods and nothing he does has any consequences.
V) One thing that I did not understand was how the Cyclopes believed he was stronger than the Gods but yet prayed to them in his time of need. One example of this was “If I really am your son and you claim to be my father- come, grant that Odysseus, raider of cities, Laertes’ son who makes his home in Ithica, never reaches home.”.

C. FIrst of all I highly enjoyed this last half of Book (. I believe it is one of the best parts of the book. I like how action packed and detailed it is. My first and main question is why Polyphemus eats two men at a time. Based on the details that the books gave us Polyphemus is a very large Cyclops. I think that he did this so that he doesn't upset his stomach. It reminded me of eating cookies. You don't eat the full pack in a day you eat a size able portion everyday. I just thought this was sort of a human characteristic or action that Polyphemus did.
D. THe best line in this story along with one of my favorite parts of this entire book is when Polyphemus asks Odysseus his name. He cleverly replies that his name is nobody. So when Polyphemus called to the other Cyclops he had call out for help and say that nobody is attacking him instead of Odysseus. THis was obviously funny because nobody came to help Polyphemus. This line is in my opinion one of the most clever in the entire book. It shows Odysseus' wit. THe line that Polyphemus said was priceless also. I didn't think he would actually say it but he did.
E. I liked the Cyclops in this story because he is big and dumb. He reminds me of the typical high-school jock. WHo might be big and tuff but is not the sharpest tool in the shed.

C) Why would they say that they were scared? “Strangers are scared…” Wouldn’t this make the Cyclops feel as if he is in control? Wouldn’t this make him feel like he could do whatever he wanted? What does rapping mean? What would be the size of the Cyclops compared to a human? Is it always going to say “…young dawn with her rose-red finger…”? The stabbing is the reason Odysseus is cursed right? E) I liked when Odysseus made up the plan to stab they Cyclops. It was a well thought out plan. He first knew not to kill him while he slept the first night because they wouldn’t get out with the rock in front. But he waited to the Cyclops left and then he made the stick sharp to stab him in the eye. Then he got him drunk until he was throwing up as said “he vomited, blind drunk…” Then as he was sleeping drunk they stabbed his eye and he wasn’t able to see but he went out to call the other. As he did this Odysseus and his men hid under the cattle so that when the Cyclops felt he wouldn’t feel the people. G) Odysseus: I can’t believe we got out alive. This was all thanks to my good brave men. But I’m so sad that those men died in that brutal matter. I wish I made up that plan way before they were killed. But to hell with the Cyclops that was so dumb to fall into my trap. I wish he would just die and go to hell.

Book 9, Lines 288-630
If I had the opportunity to be Odysseus, I would do many things differently. The first that I would do differently would be to not stay in the dark, creepy cave where a giant lives. I would have listened to my men, taken the items in the cave, and left. Odysseus decided to stay and risked his life and the life of crew members. The other thing that I wouldn’t have done was told the giant my name. By telling Polyphemus his name, Odysseus caused the giant to pray to his father Poseidon for revenge upon Odysseus, which essentially caused him to be trapped on the island for 10 years.
One thing in the book that I was confused about was why did Polyphemus turn so hostile so quickly? Why did he eat the 2 men? He was being hospitable and kind to the men and Odysseus and then he “turns around” and eats them. Another thing that confused me was why Odysseus told Polyphemus what his name was. That was the reason that Poseidon was so mad at Odysseus for this long and why he was trapped on an island.
Regarding Kyle's question I believe that he only ate two of the men because he wanted to make an impression and show that he will eat them if they do not cooperate. Obviously his plan does not work because Odysseus is extremely smart and comes up with a plan to escape the Cyclops.

One quote I liked was :“‘Stranger’ he grumbled back from his brutal heart, ‘you must be a fool, stranger, or come from nowhere, telling me to fear the Gods or avoid their wrath! We Cyclops never blink at Zeus and Zeus’ shield of storm and thunder, or any other blessed God, we’ve got more force by far.” (Book 9 Lines 306-311) Here, Odysseus tries to use the Gods as protection and the cyclops believe that gods are not friends but enemies. This is one of the reasons they start to fight.
One of my favorite parts in this book is where Odysseus states that his name is Nobody. I thought this was pretty funny because when the Cyclops tried to call for help to his other Cyclops friends, He screamed “Help Nobody is attacking me” and all the other Cyclops just ignored him because they think he was playing around with them that he was getting attacked.
My first and main question is why Polyphemus eats two men at a time. Based on the details that the books gave us Polyphemus is a very large Cyclops. Is he on a diet or something? It would be more interesting if he ate them all at the same time.
